Connection Before Learning

Two young girls are playing on an outdoor playground in front of a dark-colored building, with one girl dressed in a cream-colored sweatshirt and black leggings, and the other in a white sweatshirt and light gray sweatpants. They are standing on a colorful hopscotch game on the ground, with joyful expressions and arms outstretched in playful poses.

Children’s wellbeing comes first at St. Matthew’s - because we want every child to be happy at school and feel like they belong

That’s why wellbeing is woven into the fabric of school life here. Guided by the Wellbeing Policy and Framework for Practice, we aim to deliver a nurturing environment where every child feels valued and learning feels both meaningful and enjoyable.

For us, it’s about promoting positive, fun relationships and supportive routines.

We strengthen wellbeing by focusing on four key areas: Culture and Environment, Curriculum, Relationships and Partnerships, and Policy and Planning.

  • Classrooms are designed to support wellbeing through engaging learning experiences, to foster connections between the staff and children, creating a warm environment where children can thrive.

  • We foster emotional wellbeing with regular check-ins, social-emotional learning, and a culture where students feel comfortable expressing their feelings and seeking help when needed.

  • Social wellbeing is supported through inclusive play opportunities, restorative practices, and programmes that build empathy and collaboration.

  • Physical wellbeing is promoted through daily physical activity, safe and active play spaces, and healthy lifestyle initiatives.

Together, these practices form a cohesive wellbeing framework that helps our students thrive academically, socially and personally.

Close partnership with families and outside agencies ensures that every child can receive consistent, wrap-around support.
